YEAR \ 2016
LOCATION \ Sarajevo, Bosnia and Herzegovina
Half House is a new studio extension and refurbishment of a floor to a typical Bosnian ‘family house’, which has been designed for a wheelchair user and his family in a typical second generation ‘unplanned' neighbourhood in Sarajevo. The new half of the house is a reinterpretation of a typical Bosnian house, which responds to its unplanned surroundings and enables the original half of the house to be re-organised around a central kitchen, increasing circulation and storage space to meet the clients needs. The new half, which includes an upper gallery space for play, work or sleep, can be used as both a separate studio house for visitors, and as a large open plan dining and living area with a barbecue terrace for entertaining. Deep joinery walls to either side of the new half accommodate the main seating, storage and services to leave a single open space that frames a view of the river and mountains beyond. In the summer, the glass sliding doors can be concealed in the walls to create the feeling of a large outdoor covered space for family and community gatherings.
